CNN panelist Bakari Sellers found himself facing some quizzical looks after he predicted Republicans will “cut loose” from former President Donald Trump, calling an election loss a “Juneteenth”-like event for MAGA followers.

On a CNN panel on Wednesday evening, CNN anchor Abby Phillip noted that the lead up to the 2024 presidential election feels similar to the lead up to the 2020 presidential election, which would ultimately wind into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Sellers offered a “youthful naiveté” take by predicting a Trump loss will mean Republican followers will finally cut loose from Trump and his mounting legal troubles. Sellers noted he was facing a lot of doubtful looks as he gave his analysis.

“This is my naïveté. This is my — I just turned 40 last week, so this is youthful naiveté. I humbly believe that the best day for the Republican Party is going to be somewhere around November 6 through [November] 8 of this year, because I firmly believe that after they get beat at the polls, which matters the most, then a lot of them will cut loose of Donald Trump. They’ll cut loose of these lawsuits that you‘ll see. The people who — and I see the face that you‘re making. I said ‘youthful naiveté at the beginning of this,” he said.

“I know. We’ve heard this before,” Phillip said.

“But let me have some faith and hope and democracy and what that looks like,” Sellers responded.

“So the logic is that Trump has no power after that point because he can‘t run again, and so then they’ll break free?” podcast Bomani Jones asked.

“I just think they‘re looking for their own Juneteenth. What do we call it when a lot of white people have Juneteenth?” Sellers said, referring to the historical day that it was finally announced to enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas that they were free.

“You think they’re looking for it?” a doubtful Jones asked.

“No, I think they’ll have it though,” Sellers said.

“There’s a lot of skepticism at this table,” Phillip responded.
