The City of Battle Creek celebrated their 19th annual Juneteenth Family Day Saturday.

The event offered live music, free food, and featured more than 75 vendors.

Additionally, the event included an essay contest consisting of 15 applicants; organizers said two people tied for third place.

“This is mind blowing,” Treasure of Juneteenth Battle Creek Lynn Ward Gray said. “Because we started off very low, a lot of people didn’t know what Juneteenth was and now people are really anticipating this on an annual basis that brings joy to my heart.”

The celebration was part of the city’s new “Service on the Go” summer pop-up event series.

These once-a-month events aim to make the city’s services and information more accessible to the community, organizers said.
