Campti celebrates Juneteenth

CAMPTI, La. (KALB) Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our past and celebrate our progress. The streets of Campti were filled with excitement and pride as the town celebrated Juneteenth. This year’s celebration was particularly special with one of KALB’s own, Daviion Telsee honored as the Grand Marshal.

“Daviion was a student that I taught at Lakeview High School when I was over there,” said Campti resident Charmane Williams. “He’s a fine young man, let me tell you. There couldn’t have been a better representative for this Juneteenth festival.”

After the parade, the festivities continued at the park. The aroma of barbecue filled the air as grills were smoking, and the music had everyone grooving, creating a one-of-a-kind vibe.

“It brings us all together and lets us know the important value of being family,” added Roland Smith another Campti resident and former mayor. “It promotes collaborating together when we need to be.”

“Juneteenth is a day that we celebrate not only our freedom but for Campti. It’s a day that we celebrate family,” said Katrina Evans, Campti’s mayor. “What we are trying to do within this community and with this administration is restore the family value. We only can build what we value, and that is how we are going to rebuild this community, by valuing it.”

From dancing to delicious food, Campti’s Juneteenth celebration was a display of community spirit and cultural pride, reminding us all of the importance of this day.

“It represents the undoing of some unrighteousness,” explained Andrew Smith, a Campti native. “Having the opportunity to come out here and celebrate the freeing of the slaves and the ending of slavery in this country is a massive win for the country. It just helps us as a community to galvanize and move forward together.”

It’s events like these that truly bring the community together. Happy Juneteenth from all of us here at KALB, and a shoutout to our very own Daviion Telsee.
