CARUTHERVILLE, Mo. (KFVS) – Celebrations and festivities in honor of Juneteenth kicked off Wednesday in southeast Missouri.

Today marks the third year Juneteenth is recognized as a U.S. holiday and one Heartland community hopes to bring more awareness of black history with their celebration.

At French Park in Caruthersville, the Juneteenth celebrations are underway. Folks say they’re excited to honor Black culture in the community they were raised in.

“When I learned, when we became free, and how that worked in 1865. I just thought that it would be important to bring it into our community,” said Tequila Junior.

Tequila Junior organized the Juneteenth celebration for her hometown of Caruthersville. June 19 marks the town’s third annual event highlighting black history through music, food, and other festivities. She gives credit to the local community for the support.

“The people of this community that actually stay here have really stepped up to the plate this year and to bring it to make it help it come to life,” Junior said.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Laveta Lockridge.

Lockridge is one of dozens of Caruthersville residents enjoying the community event and she explains why Wednesday’s celebration is important to her.

“It is imperative that we instill it in our children early so that they can pass this wonderful information on to the next generation,” Lockridge said.

Paula Mcadory worked with Junior to organize the Juneteenth event. She said this celebration helps educate the youth in her community.

“It means a whole lot. and also, for our young kids to understand what Juneteenth means to us,” Mcadory said.

Mcadory says she hopes more people join them for future celebrations

“Please come out and be involved next year, so we can make it a bigger event,” Mcadory said.

Junior offers this last message to conclude the conversation.

“Just continue to be great, be great, and be heard,” Junior said.

If you are interested in joining Caruthersville’s celebration, their event is held at French Park until 8 p.m.
