Juneteenth was first officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, but the history of this celebration goes back well over a century.

The first announcement for a Juneteenth celebration in Denton was documented in 1892, but, according to the Denton Juneteenth Committee website, it is possible that celebrations began as early as 1865, when the Emancipation reached Texas.
