HOUSTON – The Juneteenth holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, the date when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, effectively enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation.

Although President Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation had officially outlawed slavery in Confederate states two and a half years earlier, the lack of Union troops in Texas meant that enforcement had been slow and inconsistent.
