ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – Juneteenth is a special day that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. Communities across the country unite to honor freedom and think about our journey towards equality. The holiday includes parades, festivals and educational events that highlight African American culture and resilience. It is a day to remember, celebrate and unite as Americans.
Different towns in Cenla celebrated Juneteenth in their own ways.
Campti had a parade followed by activities.
“It represents the undoing of some unrighteousness,” explained Andrew Smith, a Campti native. “Having the opportunity to come out here and celebrate the freeing of the slaves and the ending of slavery in this country is a massive win for the country. It just helps us as a community to galvanize and move forward together.”
Boyce decorated their town with Christmas lights.
“We want this special celebration to make people more aware and bring us all together as a community. It’s important for everyone, no matter their background, to understand and appreciate our country’s history,” said Stephan Fontenot, Community Relations for the Town of Boyce.
Natchitoches hosted a festival with Zydeco music and family activities.
“It’s a great chance for us to hang out, celebrate our culture and have fun together,” shared Natchitoches Mayor Ronnie Williams.
As Juneteenth ends, families and friends gather to celebrate their culture joyfully. Whether at parties, festivals or quiet times, Juneteenth reminds us how important it is to come together and embrace our diverse journey as one.
