CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — MTD got a head start on Juneteenth celebrations with a block party in Champaign.

The event was outside the Illinois Terminal and free to the public. People could hear from the Champaign County African American Heritage Trail and support minority-led businesses. They could also read up on the Heritage Trail’s history exhibit inside the terminal.

One organizer says they want the public to enjoy entertainment while highlighting history.

“This Juneteenth celebration is to spotlight the Black community and the local Black community and educate everybody about the history we have in our community,” Amy Snyder, Deputy Managing Director for Champaign Urbana MTD, said. “And so it’s really just a celebration. And we’re using our space to bring everybody together.”

She says to be on the lookout for their mobile bus exhibit. It will be in service through the end of August.
