GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – The city of Gainesville’s month-long Journey to Juneteenth celebration is coming to an end Wednesday.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
The journey began in the city on May 20th during Florida’s Emancipation Day.
Gainesville city leaders will be hosting the “Juneteenth Jubilee” on Wednesday from 11 am to 2 pm at Bo Diddley Plaza.
There will be musical performances, youth presentations, and speeches.
“We believe that everybody’s voice matters, we believe in celebrating people, we believe in celebrating our culture and our history,” said Gainesville’s director of equity & inclusion, Zeriah Folston. “We are what we are as a city because we’ve been collaborative with people who do not look like each other.”
The event is open to the public.
