TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The City of Tampa will start its Juneteenth celebration in East Tampa on Friday with a flag-raising ceremony.
The ceremony kicks off the city’s fifth annual Juneteenth event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“This event not only commemorates a pivotal moment in our history but also celebrates the culture and contributions of the African American community in Tampa,” Mayor Jane Castor said in a statement. “We are thrilled to celebrate Juneteenth in such a significant way.”
The event includes music, local vendors and free food. The celebration will feature performances and presentations by the Bay Area Drum Academy & Majorettes, the Blake High School Color Guard, the Nation’s Inaugural Miss Juneteenth, Saniya Gay and Miss Juneteenth Tampa, Ada Scott.
Juneteenth, considered America’s “second Independence Day,” is on June 19.
