MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Enjoy the cooler weather while it lasts, this may be the last shot of 80′s highs we have for quite some time!
Today, highs loiter in the upper 80s with mostly cloudy skies. Heat index values jump back into the mid 90s, so it’ll feel much warmer than it really is outside. Clearing out into Thursday (the first official day of summer), highs rise into the lower 90s as a high-pressure heat dome moves closer to our area.
That heat dome settles in by Friday and Saturday, giving us above-average highs in the mid-upper 90s. We’ll stay high and dry through our weekend with heat index values in the upper 90s and even into the triple digits possible.
We’ll see that high-pressure move to our west by Sunday, bringing the possibility of rain back into the forecast. Isolated showers are possible moving into the start of the work week, with highs being in the more seasonable low 90s.
TRACKING THE TROPICS
Potential Tropical Cyclone One is still spinning off in the Gulf. This one is aimed at southeastern Texas and northeastern Mexico, so while it won’t affect us, it’s still something we’re watching in the meantime. Currently, it’s moving west-northwest at about 8mph, with tropical storm warnings being issued for coastal regions of Texas and Mexico. If this develops into an actual tropical storm, it will gain the name “Alberto”.
Beyond this, there are two areas of potential: one in the Gulf where Potential Tropical Cyclone One is (with the potential of developing another system in that region other than One), and one off the eastern coast of Florida. Both of these have a 20% chance of developing within the next 7 days, but as of now nothing has become of either of them.
