Juneteenth, the nation’s youngest federally recognized holiday, falls on June 19 — this year, it’s on a Thursday — and if you are planning on celebrating outside, bring an umbrella.

Juneteenth marks the events of June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, when the last Black slaves of the Confederacy were ordered free following the arrival of Union troops.

The day, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, rose to national prominence in 2020 amid nationwide protests against ongoing racial inequities, sparked in part by the police killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. It was officially recognized as a federal holiday by President Joe Biden in 2021.

While flag raisings and outdoor community events are planned in the Binghamton area on June 19, National Weather Service Binghamton meteorologist Mike Kistner said the area could potentially see some severe weather that day. Here’s what to expect.

Weather in Binghamton on Juneteenth

Although temperatures will be hot and humid on June 19, with a high near 85 degrees, Kistner said there are showers and thunderstorms in the forecast as well.

A cold front will be moving through the area, Kistner said, which could bring strong to severe thunderstorms in the afternoon.

As of June 16, there is an 80% chance of precipitation throughout the afternoon and evening on Juneteenth, and Kistner expects that chance to increase.

The evening of June 19 shows a low near 59 degrees with showers and possible thunderstorms before 8 p.m.
