Driving Through Meridian: The Annual Juneteenth Festival

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Juneteenth, a day celebrated every year on the 19th of June, is a holiday that honors the true end of slavery.

It only began to be recognized as a national holiday as of 2021, however in Meridian Mississippi it’s been celebrated in style for years with the Juneteenth Festival.

“Well, Juneteenth has actually been a part of the Meridian culture for over a decade. It started as a small event in singing Brickman Park, and now it has amassed to what we see today.” Said Jeri Hill Juneteenth Festival Volunteer.

This year’s Juneteenth Festival started on June 14th and spanned over four days with events on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and then returning on Wednesday June 19th .

The festival was jampacked with events like the Black Business expo, pickleball tournament, Kidzone at the Mississippi Children’s Museum of Meridian, Juneteenth “Freedom Day” Gospel Play and more.

The celebration ended on Wednesday with the Trailblazer Awards and Gospel Celebration where awards went out to those that had gained made a significant impact on our community.

Juneteenth means something to this community and everyone who came out to this year’s festival showed just that.

“Juneteenth for me means freedom man. It means celebration. You know what I’m saying, it’s one of those situations where clearly, we’re trying to make it as big as possible now. So us as black people, as in the black community, we can celebrate ourselves and our heritage and celebrate our ancestors as well as what they went through. So I’m just honored to be able to be here on this particular day as well.” Said rapper and Trailblazer Award winner BIG K.R.T.T.

So next June, if you’re driving through Meridian, check out the Juneteenth Festival and everything it has to offer.
