Rochester, N.Y. — The Strong National Museum of Play partnered with the American Dairy Association North East (ADANE) for a Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday.

The event offered families a chance to engage in performances and activities that celebrated the holiday while fostering an appreciation for Black history, culture, and cuisine.

The celebration featured musical acts, dance lessons, games, and an interactive culinary activity that highlighted a cultural dish, hibiscus cookies.

Attendees decorated the cookies with bold colors, honoring the holiday’s history of resilience, joy, and cultural heritage.

“We want to celebrate baking together,” said Chef and Registered Dietitian Nada Mays. “It’s a great way to build relationships with food. We want to celebrate red as the color for Juneteenth. Red is the color of power and the color of resilience in African American culture and tradition. That’s why every Juneteenth, we eat red foods, we wear red as the color and we celebrate with red.”

The Strong teamed up with the Rochester Area Community Foundation and Greater Rochester Martin Luther King Jr. Commission to offer free admission and parking in honor of Juneteenth.
