FARMVILLE, N.C. (WITN) -It was a special day to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday as Wednesday was the third official year of its national commemoration since President Joe Biden declared it a federal holiday back in 2021.
The Farmville community surely came out in numbers to celebrate Juneteenth Wednesday afternoon.
It may be three years since Juneteenth was signed into law as a federal holiday, but freedom for African Americans came on this day in 1865.
“Remember your past, but also you’re moving into your future,” said Lynda King, Juneteenth Celebration Organizer. “That’s what Juneteenth is all about.”
This year is Farmville’s second annual Juneteenth celebration, but word has spread since last year’s inaugural event because State Democratic Congressman Don Davis was in attendance Wednesday.
King says the event will only continue to grow each year.
“I’m looking for better and brighter the third year of Juneteenth,” King said. “It’s going to be even bigger than this next year.”
