In honor of the Juneteenth holiday that falls on June 19 each year, the Franklin County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People hosted a celebration on June 15 at the Old Cowan Road Neighborhood Park.
Juneteenth celebrates the freeing of slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865, with an order from Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger on that date setting in motion the final enforcement of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation at the end of the Civil War.
