
It’s a decision 160 years in the making: last week, the Galveston City Council agreed it’s time for the city to increase its involvement in building a Juneteenth museum on the island.
It was here that on June 19, 1865, Union Army forces, including about 2,000 Black soldiers, under the command of Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger occupied Galveston and issued General Order No. 3, freeing people still in bondage.
