Hours of operation at a number of offices, institutions and businesses will be affected by the observance Wednesday of Juneteenth, a national holiday.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay in Texas and announced the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved Black people two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Juneteenth has been celebrated for many years in Texas but in recent years has been observed as a celebration of Black culture and heritage by communities across the U.S. It was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, the first year a Juneteenth event was held in Santa Fe.
