GREEN BAY (WLUK) — Saturday, hundreds of community members gathered at Joannes Park for the fifth annual Juneteenth celebration, hosted by We All Rise African American Resource Center. The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Black Men Are Caregivers.’

Organizers with the African American Resource Center say Juneteenth isn’t just about celebrating the past, but also the future journey for Black and Brown citizens.

“We emphasize the ongoing journey towards justice, equality, and empowerment. We envision sparking conversations that drive positive change, promote unity, and contribute to a future where every Black man is acknowledged, respected, and celebrated as the remarkable individual they are,” the organization says in a release.

Saturday’s event featured a parade, local live entertainment, Black-owned vendors, and a community meal.

The African American Resource Center also asked community members to nominate a Black man in their life ‘who lives the mission of caregiver in our community.”

At the end of Saturday’s celebration, 24 nominated men will be recognized.

“I acknowledge the labor of Black and Brown folks, who came before me who came us, who have for generations sacrificed their lives to build this place we now call home. Our presence would not be possible without their grit, resilience, and freedom dreams,” said Stephanie Ortiz, the Youth Prevention and Evaluation Director, during the celebration’s opening remarks.

The celebration will wrap up at 9 p.m. with a fireworks show.
