HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – Community members gathered for a Juneteenth celebration at the Art Station in downtown Hazard.
Organizers with Southeast Kentucky African-American Museum and Cultural Center, Hazard Community and Technical College and others hosted the event.
Those participating learned more about the history of Juneteenth.
Event leader Dee Parker said they included everyone in the celebration.
”In Galveston, Texas, you know, being enslaved, people there, they didn’t know they was free, but once they found out, that’s a reflection of Juneteenth, to celebrate us without excluding anybody else,” said Parker.
Parker said they had food catered that slaves would have eaten to survive.
