HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – McMahon Elementary School hosted a Juneteenth ceremony on Tuesday.

The event happened Tuesday morning, with students and staff helping raise a flag for the holiday.

The ceremony also included opening remarks by Steven Moguel, the director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Holyoke Public Schools. “I’m really joyed; in fact, I really just feel content and happy that one, this event was allowed, and then we were able to celebrate it as a whole school, for the first time!” says Moguel.

Juneteenth is celebrated annually and marks the date, June 19th, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the Civil War.
