HUNTINGTON, Texas (KTRE) – This weekend, East Texas communities held celebrations to commemorate Juneteenth.

The Juneteenth Association of Huntington hosted its first Juneteenth celebration at Centennial Park on Saturday. About 125 people participated in the event.

The association honored four Huntington residents for their outstanding contributions to the community, and they also crowned their first Juneteenth princess, Remy Barefield.

Her mother, Stephanie Barefield, said it’s important for children to know what Juneteenth stands for.

“For all children, especially for her, since she was born on this day. For years to come, I’m going to teach her what this day, what it truly means. She’s making history today by being here and by being the first Juneteenth queen of Huntington, Texas,” said Barefield.

The association plans to continue the Juneteenth celebration next year with hopes of reaching more people.
