Communities across the Local 6 area will celebrate Juneteenth this month, and various events are planned.

Juneteenth falls on June 19, and it was officially designated as a federal holiday in 2021. The day commemorates June 19, 1865 — the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, first learned slavery had been abolished.

Juneteenth celebrations coming up in the Local 6 area include:

  • The City of Paducah, in partnership with the NAACP and the Carson Center for the Performing Arts, is hosting a Juneteenth event. For more details, click here.
  • The local community can enjoy the summer season as the Noble Park Pool is open on several holidays, including Juneteenth. For more details, click here.

  • Southern Illinois is marking the fourth annual celebration with various events for the local community, including The Black Chamber of Commerce of Southern Illinois, John A. Logan College’s celebration, and more; for more details, click here.
