HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, ios being celebrated across the nation Wednesday.

Black Americans have celebrated Juneteenth since the 1800s, however, it has been officially recognized as a federal holiday over the last few years.

Only 28 states, including Connecticut, have made it a permanent paid or legal holiday with legislation or executive action, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Here are some events and celebrations being held across the state:

Hartford

  • Juneteenth Comic Workshop
    • The Bushnell, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Juneteenth Panel Discussion & Flag Raising Ceremony
    • State Capitol, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Middletown

Plainville

  • Juneteenth 2024 Celebration
    • Veteran’s Memorial Park, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Waterbury

  • Juneteenth 2024 Celebration
    • Waterbury City Hall Courtyard, 11 a.m.

New London

  • Juneteenth flag-raising ceremony
    • City Hall, 6 p.m.
