ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – June 19 isn’t just any other day — it’s Juneteenth!
The Emancipation Proclamation, which freed enslaved people in the United States, took effect in 1863. But in Confederate-controlled territories, freedom wouldn’t come until much later, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
On June 19, 1865 — about two months after the Civil War ended — Union troops came to Texas and announced that more than 250,000 people were now free. That day is now known as Juneteenth, established as a federal holiday in 2021.
