Four children competing in a spelling bee Saturday at Silver Creek Park & Recreation Center got plenty of attention from the hundreds of people in attendance. But no one showed them more support than 66-year-old Sheila Brooks.
Sitting under a shady canopy to beat the heat, the southwest Bakersfield resident shouted words of encouragement to the kids, some of whom she knew as the children of local residents she met when they were young.
