LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Even though Juneteenth is next week, celebrations for the holiday are already kicking off.

The celebratory weekend began with a prayer breakfast.

It was held Friday morning at the Patterson Center and brought together spiritual leaders from various congregations across the area for an event that grows more every year.

Bishop John Dunaway, the city-wide Juneteenth Coordinator, says he hopes to see it grow into an even larger event.

”This year it is a three-day event,” Dunaway said. “We would like to grow Juneteenth to where it is actually a week-long full week, but more than just a celebration, it is a great opportunity for education.”

The prayer was followed by a community breakfast, all in the spirit of togetherness and worship.
