MADISON (WKOW) — Juneteenth celebrations kicked-off in Penn Park in Madison on Saturday, and organizers are working to share resources of all sorts with the Black community.
The Kujichagulia Madison Center for Self-Determination focuses on addressing the collective issues the Black community faces in certain sectors of the Madison community.
The Juneteenth celebration specifically puts an emphasis on freedom and heritage.
Rach Weatherby is a coordinator for the event. He said a lot of their focus is on ‘resilience.’
“Reclamation and cohesion and bringing all the resources to the park so everybody in the community can utilize [them] and move forward to being successful,” Weatherby said.
The organization also works year-round to help communities who are at risk for economic and social disparities while also advocating for African American through personal and economic empowerment.
