Juneteenth celebrations underway in NCFL

YOUR LOCAL STATION, Fla. (WCJB) -Several Juneteenth events are happening across north central Florida today.

In Ocala, city leaders are showing the ‘Juneteenth: The Freedom to Learn Documentary’. This takes place at the Live Oak Hall from 10-11 am.

Another celebration kicks off at Heritage Park (116 N Main St.) in Williston. The Community Juneteenth Celebration Jubilee runs from 10 am to 2 pm.

In Live Oak, the Suwannee County Juneteenth Festival gets started at 2 to 6 pm at the Coliseum (1302 11th Street).

Lastly, Gainesville city leaders are wrapping up their month-long celebration with the “Juneteenth Jubilee” at Bo Diddley Plaza from 11 am to 2 pm. Officials started the journey on May 20th when enslaved people in Florida were freed.

On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed all enslaved people in the U.S. It wasn’t until two years later on June 19th, that the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were freed.

All of these events are free and open to everyone.
