On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden made Juneteenth a national holiday

Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when the 117th Congress enacted and President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making it the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983.

Before being recognized as a federal holiday, Juneteenth was commemorated by Black Americans, with celebrations beginning in 1866, one year after the official announcement. These early celebrations frequently centered on family gatherings and religious celebrations, but food festivals, parades and community events gained popularity in the 1970s.
