HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – The annual Juneteenth celebration has begun in Hattiesburg.
Saturday, Hattiesburg Juneteenth celebration organizers hosted a flag-rarising ceremony at Vernon Dahmer Park for the Juneteenth flag.
Juneteenth is a national holiday celebrated each June 19th.
It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S.
Saturday’s ceremony included dance performances and the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Activities at Dahmer Park are also planned for Saturday, June 14 and Thursday, June 19.
“We’ll have food, we’ll have arts and crafts and we’ll have live entertainment,” said Ray A. Smith, executive director and coordinator of the Hattiesburg Juneteenth Celebration.
The June 14 celebration will include a parade and on June 19, events will wrap up with a fireworks show.
