BLOOMINGTON (25News Now) – Saturday’s Juneteenth celebration at Miller Park in Bloomington included food trucks and a chance to shop around for everything from clothes to trinkets from local vendors.
Jumping for Joy, a jump rope squad was one of the groups of youth performers.
Both the President, Phantasia Terrell, and team coach, NaShyla McQuirter say the organization gives kids an opportunity that’s personal for them and one they were excited to show off.
“I just enjoy it because a kid I was not given the opportunity to jump rope, but our organization is going to make sure every child or adult has an opportunity,” said Terrell.
McQuirter shares her excitement for the performance.
“We’ve got a lot of single tricks, and tricks that they’re able to do together in the long rope and double-dutch rope, so it’ll be a lot of fun,” she said.
The Youth leader for the NAACP’s Bloomington-Normal Branch, Bradley Ross Jackson, says he brought Juneteenth trivia for those attending the celebration.
“I’m actually asking the people that come to our table some questions about Juneteenth to make sure that they understand the true essence of the date, how it has impacted our world, and why it’s a federal holiday,” he said.
Some of the prizes included sunglasses, backpacks, and pens.
Admission was free for anyone who came by.
