SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Several free events are planned for Juneteenth for the weekend of June 15-16.

There’s a Juneteenth community celebration on Saturday at the Springfield Expo Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be vendors, bounce houses, music, and food trucks.

There is a film screening of the Milly Project at the Springfield Art Museum Saturday at 6 p.m. and a question and answer session with some of the performers.

On Sunday, there will be a tour and overview of the programs and renovations at Silver Springs Park from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Finally, there will be a gospel choir celebration at Washington Avenue Baptist Church at 6 p.m.

“Juneteenth is celebrating the end of slavery in the United States. And that’s something that we should all celebrate,” said Darline Mabins, the community, diversity, and equity director for Community Partnership of the Ozarks.

“It became a national holiday in 2021 so it really brought Juneteenth to the forefront of the whole nation so I think it’s a great time to show support to all members of our community.”

Mabins said there has been a lot of support from businesses and community members.

This is the second year that Community Partnership of the Ozarks and the NAACP of Springfield are teaming for this citywide celebration.
