BRADENTON, Fla. (WWSB) – Juneteenth is about honoring and celebrating June 19th, 1865. The day when thousands of enslaved people in Texas learned they were finally free. This happening over two years after President Abraham Lincon signed the Emancipation Proclamation, banning slavery in America.
President Joe Biden, signing the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act back in 2021, which made the day a national holiday.
One organization in Bradenton, Recess Education, hosted a Juneteenth educational and celebratory event on Wednesday at Bat City Comic.
RecessEdu has hosted the same event on Juneteenth for the past seven years, teaching elementary school students about the day and why it’s important. The children are read to by a black author, play games, and make crafts.
“Our ancestors were denied the right to read, it was against the law, so we celebrate Juneteenth by celebrating literacy,” said Dr. Sharon Jefferson, the creator of RecessEdu.
