Wednesday is Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and there are several events going on in Maine to mark the day.

The Victoria Mansion in Portland will be open offering a community day with free admission and a special program.

They’re inviting visitors and members of the public to head to Victoria Mansion’s lawn at noon for a recitation by local actors of the emancipation proclamation.

In Lewiston, there will be a Juneteenth block party, with a parade starting at 2:30 p.m., and the party itself runs from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It will be accompanied by live performances and discussions with Lewiston artists.

At the Greely Center for the Arts, the Cumberland Community Band and some special guests invite you to join them for a special music program.

This is at Main Street from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. You’re welcome to bring chairs, blankets and a picnic!
