ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – The Martin Luther King, Jr. Branch Library in Alexandria has organized a “Story Stroll” to honor Juneteenth, celebrating African American culture.

The stroll takes you through a detailed journey of its history, from its beginnings in slavery to gaining freedom. It also honors local heroes who shaped our community. The aim is to help people to better understand African American culture and remember its origins.

“The luxuries we have now come with the reminder that our journey to freedom was hard-fought,” said Lakiesha Henton, manager of the library branch. “Juneteenth isn’t just a day off or a BBQ. It marks the realization of our freedom, which took over two years to achieve. It urges us to keep striving for a better future for ourselves, our community and our families.”

Henton said that she hopes the visitors recognize that strength and perseverance were not a given, they were something earned and something not to be taken for granted.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Branch Library is located at 1115 Broadway Avenue in Alexandria.
