MEXIA, Texas (KWTX) -The Juneteenth event in Mexia is the longest celebration in the nation and celebrates the freedom of slaves after they were emancipated in Texas.
The celebration lasts 5 days and people from all over Texas come to celebrate.
The Limestone County 19th of June Organization Board Chairman Dr. Sharon Kirven says that this celebration has lasted for over 150 years and teaches the younger generation their history and future legacy.
“We must know where we came from, how we got here and what we are going to do to keep going forward to the place where we want to be not where somebody else wants us to be” Dr. Kirven said.
The event will continue each day until June 19th at the Booker T. Washington Park in Mexia.
