EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Juneteenth may be a week away, but Michigan State University started its celebration early.
This year marks the fifth annual Juneteenth celebration at MSU. The theme, ‘A Juneteenth Renaissance: Bridging Freedom’s Legacy and Tomorrow’s Vision.’
“It’s an opportunity for us to not only celebrate this occasion, but provide an educational forum and raise awareness about what Juneteenth is,” said Amanda Flores, Co-Chair of the event.
Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the day in 1865 when union army officials read the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas.
“It means empowerment. It means freedom. It means space to just be who I am,” said Yolanda Anderson, a vendor and coordinator for the event.
Hundreds of people, from all different backgrounds, gathered at the MSU Multicultural Center to celebrate.
There was live music, food, and a Black Wall Street Vendor Fair.
“That’s what’s important is for us all to come together to celebrate one another, because all of us together, we’re making each other stronger,” said Florene McGlothian-Taylor, an attendee.
