TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Organizers for an event to bring people together for Juneteenth canceled the celebration on Wednesday.
Organizers for “Toledo’s Juneteenth Celebration” said in a post on June 19 they canceled the event due to very low ticket sales. They say anyone who bought tickets will get a full refund, along with vendors and food trucks.
“We just ask that you be patient with us as we start that process,” a post from the event page says. It adds it should not take long to process.
A Facebook live with the event’s organizing board said only 92 people bought tickets in advance. The livestream also mentioned unexpected, last-minute expenses like fencing and portable bathrooms. They say they weren’t aware until this week that there were also issues with the stage and the audio set up.
It was originally scheduled to happen at Promenade Park and include a concert series. Flyers touted performances by Rob Base and Chubb Rock, including Future Davis, Victor Terry, King Chi, Lady K and Hollywood Connection Band, along with a live DJ Lyte N Rod.
The City of Toledo included the event in its listing of events throughout the week to celebrate. The city’s flyer said it was sponsored by Slang Game, Lyte House and Jeep.
Organizers said they will move forward and next year will be “bigger and better” and say they support anything that puts the community in a positive light.
The organization’s website said it was founded in 2020 and operates off of members and volunteers in Toledo.
“The core of our work lies in the continuous passion and dedication we bring to the range of projects we take part in,” the website read. “Our most important mission within Toledo’s Juneteenth Celebration is to tackle the issues surrounding mental health. Bringing awareness and providing the help needed so we may function as a healthy and successful community.”
