The Carthage Courtesy Club lead a celebration of the Juneteenth holiday on Saturday, June 15 in downtown Carthage. A Juneteenth parade preceded the event.

The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on June 19, 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the Jan. 1, 1863, Emancipation Proclamation. It was not until June 19, 1865 when word of that action finally reached Texas at the port of Galveston.
