RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – City services and schedules, including trash collection, transit operations, and library services, will be adjusted for the observance of Juneteenth Freedom Day on Wednesday, June 19.
The Rapid City Landfill will be closed for the holiday. Trash collection operations will be suspended and collected on Thursday. There will be no change in collections on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of the holiday week, so residents should leave their trash out until it is collected.
Rapid Transit Services, including RapidRide and Dial-A-Ride services, will not be operating on Wednesday, June 19 in observance of the national holiday. The Rapid City Public Library and The Monument will also be closed for the holiday.
Juneteenth commemorates and observes the official end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day when word of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
