Each year the Army joins the rest of America in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Redstone’s observance is Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. in Bob Jones Auditorium.
The guest speaker is Carlos Javier Torres, director of programs and community partnerships at the Hispanic and Immigrant Center of Alabama, located in Birmingham. Originally from Puerto Rico, he moved to Alabama over 20 years ago and has worked in community outreach, philanthropy, and public health administration.
The center addresses the most pressing challenges and opportunities faced by Hispanic families. Their work operates in a culturally specific, bilingual environment, which helps move families out of poverty and create pathways for impact.
Redstone’s celebration is hosted by the Security Assistance Command, and will feature some Latin dance demonstrations, music and food tastings from food trucks specializing in Latin fare.
National Hispanic Heritage Month was first observed in 1968 and expanded in 1988 when it was enacted into law. Sept. 15 is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and 18, respectively. Columbus Day, or Dia de la Raza, is Oct. 12.
