
Ahead of the Juneteenth holiday, Republic Bank hosted its fifth annual celebration at the Republic Bank Foundation YMCA.The event not only helped highlight the history of emancipation but also the importance of staying healthy.The event was held in partnership with Kentucky African Americans Against Cancer and several other community organizations.Together, they offered free health screenings and educational resources aimed at improving the health of people in west Louisville.According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, with the risk being significantly higher for Black men.Virginia Bredford, who serves as community outreach coordinator for KAAAC, said that is why events like this are important.”Today makes me feel wonderful because I’ve been a nurse in this community for a long time,” Bredford said. “Just making sure that people are educated, because education is knowledge and knowledge is power.”In addition to prostate screenings, attendees were also offered free dental screenings.
