REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (WSYX) — A special Juneteenth event brought the community together for a living history lesson.
It was an evening of celebration, education, and fun as the city of Reynoldsburg hosted its annual Juneteenth Celebration.
ABC 6’s Rodney Dunigan served as the emcee for the event.
In 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday. It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans.
“This is the fifth annual Reynoldsburg Juneteenth. We’re here at Huber Park celebrating freedom, celebrating our emancipation day,” Reynoldsburg city council president Meredith Lawson-Rowe said. “It is a commemoration day of the end of slavery in Galveston, Texas, and this celebration has just grown to be a flagship in Central Ohio, especially here in Reynoldsburg to celebrate our freedom.”
Organizers said the family-friendly gathering was aimed at not only educating the public, but also bringing the community together in peace with a day of celebration bringing history to life.
