RICEBORO, Ga. (WTOC) – Juneteenth celebrations continue across our area. The city of Riceboro in Liberty County is hosting their 4th annual Juneteenth freedom festival.
WTOC was at the festival Wednesday, the festival was held not only to celebrate, but to learn about what this day means for history.
Organizers said they will continue to put this event on to educate upcoming generations and remember what 1865 was all about.
“It’s about freedom,” said PMBA Association moderator, Ronnie Leggett.
Many people gathered at the Riceboro Youth Center to celebrate Juneteenth.
A day that honors the moment Galveston Texas slaves found out they were free.
Now, celebrated all across our nation.
Leaders in Liberty County said they have one goal.
“Let everybody know, we are a resilient people,” said Legget.
It’s a day of celebration and community. Edgar Timmons said it’s an honor to be a part of putting this on for the community he serves.
“This is so encouraging and it’s so exciting, and it’s the right thing to do,” said Timmons.
This is Riceboro’s 4th annual Juneteenth freedom festival. It’s an all-day event, free to the public. There are community resources, music and dance to honor the day.
“This community is coming together; this community is trying to strive to do what’s right,” said Leggett.
WTOC’s very own Dawn Baker, was featured in the festival. She said, it means everything to give back to the community that raised her.
“It’s always even more special when I get a chance to come to Riceboro because this is where I grew up. I was here until I was in the 8th grade, went to church here, went to school in Hinesville, and to see all these people that I haven’t seen, many of them in a very long time, it just fills my heart with joy,” said Baker.
