FLINT, Mich. (WNEM) – Flint’s own Claressa Shields is holding a major event in the city’s backyard.

The GWOAT and her opponent Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse will hold a press conference in Flint on Juneteenth at 10:30 a.m. ahead of their main event title fight at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on July 27. It’ll take place at the Dome behind Flint City Hall.

Shields will welcome Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley to the event on Wednesday, June 19.

Shields has made history as a two-time Olympic gold medalist and the most decorated female professional boxer in history.

“This is a significant and unique fight where I am moving up two weight classes against a very tough champion in my quest to become a world champion in my fourth weight division,” said Shields.

“I am so proud to welcome Claressa Shields home to Flint once again, and it’s fitting that we cheer her on in her next big challenge on Juneteenth,” Neeley said. “Juneteenth is about the freedom and indomitable spirit of African Americans in the face of great adversity, and Claressa shows us every day what it means to live free and empowered, in pursuit of excellence.”
