SPARTANBURG, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – It was a packed house in Spartanburg Wednesday as the organization, Spartanburg Juneteenth Inc., held their annual Juneteenth seminar.
The event was held at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Spartanburg Juneteenth was founded in 2016 by Spartanburg County Councilor Mo Abusaft. Back then, he says despite the city having a majority African American population—there weren’t many events to celebrate Black culture.
Since then in honor of the Juneteenth holiday—the organization has hosted a series of events including festivals, a gala, a Black business expo and educational events like the educational seminar. They hope to continue growing the celebration each year.
“The history of Juneteenth as a celebration holiday, nationally, is one that it’s ebbed and flowed since the period of emancipation, “ said Abusaft. “It’s time to get we’ve grown from one event in a park to now there’s two weeks of events and the City of Spartanburg now recognizing Juneteenth.”
