WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – As Juneteenth events kick off around the community, neighbors and artists came together at the ‘Speak Ya Peace’ Juneteenth Celebration on Sunday, June 16.

The Juneteenth Committee of Wilmington Inc. and Speak Ya Peace hosted the celebration complete with poetry readings, spoken word, and music.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

Mahlaynee Cooper, co-founder of Speak Ya Peace, says it’s all about recognizing what the country has gone through and what neighbors still struggle with today.

“It’s about humanity. This is the human race, and we all should be treated as if we were human and not inferior to anyone else,” she said.

This is part of several events in the Wilmington community to celebrate Juneteenth. You can see the full list here.
