BEND, Ore. — The group behind the annual Juneteenth celebrations at Drake Park in Bend is canceling this year’s event, citing a “volatile political climate” and racial threats. It came the same day that the Latino Community Association announced it was canceling Latino Fest over rising fear within the Latino community.
The Father’s Group made the announcement about Juneteenth on Facebook Monday night.
“As you know, Juneteenth is more than just a holiday for us — it’s a time to uplift our history, celebrate our resilience, and stand in joyful solidarity. But in today’s increasingly volatile political climate, with rising incidents of racial aggression and threats—particularly toward Black and Latino communities—safety must come first,” the group wrote.

“Every year, our celebration welcomes families, youth, elders, and people from all walks of life. Your safety is our top priority. As protectors and organizers, we refuse to put our community at risk. We’d rather pause now than regret later,” it continued. “But make no mistake—we are not backing down. We are regrouping. And we’ll be back in 2026, stronger, safer, and bolder than ever.”
The Father’s Group said Central Oregon Earthseeds is putting together its own Juneteenth celebration and details will be released later.
Juneteenth is June 19th, marking the day in 1865 with the last of the enslaved African Americans were informed they were free.
Also on Monday, the LCA said it was canceling this year’s Latino Fest in Madras, citing “heightened fear among immigrant community members due to recent immigration enforcement actions, anti-immigrant rhetoric, or rumors of raids or targeting.”
