ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Town of Brighton honored Juneteenth with a flag raising ceremony at town hall Friday.
This year’s event recognized Dr. Walter Cooper, the first African-American to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester.
This celebration comes as part of Brighton’s implementation of it’s inclusion, diversity, equity and advisory plan.
“It means the world to me to have this engaged community celebrating with the African-American community,” Brighton Town Councilmember Robin Wilt said. “Obviously the focus of the event is on the liberation within the African-American community but as I said in my comments it is about liberation and freedom for all, so the more community members that we have out —the message and awareness around Juneteenth is raised— the better off we are.”
Attendees enjoyed a musical performance by Grammy-nominated and award winning saxophonist Jimmie Highsmith Jr.
